Established as a foundation by the Senate of the Freie Hansestadt Bremen in 1982, the Centre of European Law and Politics at the University of Bremen (ZERP) conducts interdisciplinary research on European integration. The combined focus on law and politics, which integrates disciplines such as political theory, legal sociology as well as constitutional, economic and private law, constitutes the distinctive character of the institute. The research activities of ZERP are carried out in collaboration with the departments of law, social and political science at the University of Bremen. In particular, ZERP is one of the supporting institutes of the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Collaborative Research Center "Transformations of the State".
ZERP also conducts research projects together with prominent foreign partner institutions such as the European University Institute in Florence, the Institute of European and Comparative Law at the University of Oxford and the Scuola S. Anna in Pisa. The Directors of ZERP are professors in law at the University of Bremen: Andreas Fischer-Lescano (Public Law, European Law, International Law, Political Theory and Legal Policy) Christoph U. Schmid (European Private and Economic Law). The ZERP staff comprises pre-doc and post-doc researchers from several European countries. In addition, ZERP regularly hosts guest researchers and fellows.
